Synopsis

GAURI, 45, is working as a sweeper in art institute. She is living in a chawl based in Kurla slums, Mumbai with her old mother Kasturi, 73. Simultaneously she used to give sittings for the paintings of student painters in art institute. Young models are getting work repeatedly and Because of Gauri’s age no one is asking her for sitting. Now after almost 3 years she gets a call from a painter called MAHESH, 28, for sitting who is a pass out from the same institute and want to complete a painting for a painting competition. Meeting takes place in Mahesh’s house and it ignites a hope into the mind of Gauri that there is still a demand for her outside of the institute and she can compete with other models as well. She prepares for the sitting again for whole night. She is happy now that once the flow of work starts again then she can treat her mother well.Next day when Gauri arrives to Mahesh’s house, she comes to know that he has selected another model for his painting. Mahesh clears to Gauri that he doesn’t need Gauri anymore. Gauri’s hope gets ruined. She is not ready to accept that she would have to live again in the same way how she was living till now. So in this case when she arrives her house she does something which satisfies her as a model. In this film we can see that when a woman looks at herself in the mirror, it always through the male gaze, she has accepted that she will do all ‘SHRINGAR’(makeup) for him only but Gauri denies this theory and looks towards herself as what she always wanted to be!
